NSR + Friends

Every time NSR releases a new mix. I'm like. "Dear God in Heaven, please let this be a mix of raps." (LOL, "God.") And you know what? It's never a mix of raps. Which isn't to say that his mixes aren't good. I mean, they're great. Great, even. And I mean. Like. This is easily my favorite mix of his. Which is saying a lot considering I did a mix with the god three months ago. But I mean. Yo. Noah. Record a mix of '90s hip-hop for me already. Yeesh. The kind of stuff that you were listening to while I was listening to Taking Back Sunday. Thanz!

Isn't it totally fitting that I'm blogging the song "Friend Crush" right below NSR's new mix?!

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah + Portugal. The Man + Turbz + NSR + Dash Speaks + DJ Half Price + DJ Salinger + Friendly Greg

CMJ. So my first CMJ. Drove down to NYC from New Hampshire. DJed the Big Stereo and Palms Out Sounds party. At some place. On the LES? Maybe? I have no idea, no recollection. It was my first time in NYC, gimme a break. I remember that I played right before Little Boots. And that I played a ton of Mylo. And that the right CDJ turned off in the middle of my set and I had a freakout.

Anyways. CMJ. Today. First up is the daytime party at The Ace Hotel. Portugal. The Man. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Zola Jesus. We Are Augustines. Beggars Group. Free. Duh. What's not to like about that?

"When The War Ends" by Portugal. The Man by Portugaltheman

And then of course, the #AlmostFamous CMJ pseudo-showcase. Turbz. NSR. Dash Speaks. DJ Half Price. DJ Salinger. Myself. At The Blind Barber on 10th and B. From 10-4. Free, purr usual. Grown and sexy, purr usual. Etc. Less CMJ, more standard party time.

NSR + Turbz

So once upon a time I did not know NSR. But I went to his rap show because I didn't have any "friends" in New York and he was an "acquaintance" so he put me on the "guest list" because "I had nothing better to do." Anyways, he and Turbz had just finished a new joint. Called "That Girl." And I was totally feeling it. "OMG, this song's so good," I proclaimed. And blah, blah, blah, etc.

Anyways. The track's gonna be used during The CW's Ringer tomorrow night. In a club scene. Speakers going hammer. There will probably be a fake DJ fist pumping. With impecable bone structure. But too much hair gel. So watch the show. Download the song. Then meet the kids at Botanica afterwards to congratulate them on becoming mega OD famous.

Scott Melker + NSR + Friendly Greg

OK. So this blog is first and foremost about making myself look cool. So with that in mind, think about the fact that I haven't yet posted my latest mix. Weird, right? Yea, I'm forgetful. But alas, here it is. My good pal NSR and I sat down one afternoon. Made a crate. Tweaked it. Mapped out a track list. And recorded the mix the next afternoon in one take. It may not be the best thing you've ever heard, but it's certainly the best thing I've ever heard.

Speaking of 101 Management. Scott Melker. Easily one of the best DJs I've ever met. Easily the best DJ that likes me enough to give me high fives on the regular. Anyways. Much like the kid Turbz (see: yesterday), Scott makes mad edits. Mash-ups. Moombahpop. Etc. You can find the vast majority of them here. But yo. Most recently it's the "Sex on Fire" v. Gucci joint. And it's fire, and it's blowing up the internet. Give it a whirl:

Cosmo Baker + 101

OK. Tonight. Tonight is gonna be major, major, major. We've got one DJ celebrating an engagement and three DJs celebrating birthdays. We've got that open vodka bar from 10-11. It's free. Etc. Oh, and we've also got Cosmo Baker. Yea, this Cosmo Baker. The legend. Oh my goodness, goodness gracious, holy cow.

I mean. Like. I dunno. I'm not saying you have to come. It's just that. Like. What are you trying to get involved in that's gonna be better than this?

Nick Catchdubs + 101 Crew

101 is a monthly Thursday night party at 49 Grove with the 101 Management crew (Scott Melker, NSR, Ian Boyd, and me), Senari, the Prodigy kids, and some special guests. Tonight we've got Nick Catchdubs from Fool's Gold, Mike Famous, and Scott Matelic guesting. Hip-hop happy hour from 7-10, 101 DJs from 10-4, open vodka bar from 10-11, no cover, etc. Most importantly, I'll be playing Choppa's hit single "Choppa Style" back-to-back-to-etc. from 3-4.

Scott Melker + NSR + Dirty South Joe + Flufftronix

Ayo. Boys. Girls. It's been what, five months now? Yea, five months. Way back in September I was tellin' y'all about, "Blah, blah, blah, I really wanna DJ a party with NSR, this, that, and the other, blah, blah." Well ladies and gents, dreams do in fact come true. NSR and I now rock together the first Wednesday of every month at The Blind Barber and the second Thursday of every month at 49 Grove. It's truly magical, and it sounds a little something like this:

NSR - The War on Hugs

What's more, I've got three mixes to share from our friend Scott Melker. First up is Scott's The Melker Project. A wild tape full of mash-ups done live on turntables, not production software. Really impressive, infectious stuff:

Scott Melker - The Melker Project

And since the above mix is sure to leave you wanting more, check out Scott's Valentine's-appropriate Knockin' Boots series. The first of the two is one of my favorite mixes in the history of ever. It dropped in 2008 and never got old. The second picks up just where the first left off. A prime selection of 90s R&B. Grade A baby-makin' music:

Scott Melker - Knockin' Boots
Scott Melker - Knockin' Boots 2

And last but not least is Dirty South Joe and Flufftronix's Luvstep 2. Dubstep creeps me out. Annoys me. Irritates me. Etc. But DSJ and Fluffy's Luvstep was a classic. A wonderfully done mix. I haven't had time to check out the second (it was released just minutes ago), but I'm sure it's just as splendid. Peep them both at the Luvstep website and be sure to catch the dudes on their release tour:

Dirty South Joe and Flufftronix - Luvstep 1 + 2

Aight, so that's that. I'd like to be all, "I'm totally gonna start posting again, let's get the ball rolling!" But yea, that's probably not gonna happen. But y'all might as well leave me in your RSS feeds just in case.

Best,
Greg

DStar + Redsean + NSR

I've DJed with the dude DStar two times now, and both times I've left incredibly impressed with just about everything he does. Naturally I love his new mix with DJ Heat and Trazz. So many jams, so many dope mixes, etc. Such a party mix.

DJ DStar and DJ Heat - Fall Back

I've also played with Redsean a few times. As in a zillion times. Dude hooked me up with my first gig in Dallas and has been heaps keen to book me whenever I go back. What's more, he's as good a DJ as he is a person. His latest mix is a chill endeavor; put on headphones, light a cigarette, and relax.

Redsean - I Need a Beach

Last up is a mix from a friend with whom I've never DJed (though I hope that changes soon): NSR. His Gummy Bears & Boat Shoes falls somewhere between DStar's and Sean's mixes - NSR mixes some chill tracks with a few party jams, the end result being a refreshing, invigorating mix.

Bonus: Download Redsean's "Pastel Lights" remix here.

Shaunbless + NSR

So I've been working with 101 Management for a minute now, and we've got a grip of artists that I'm pretty excited about. First up is Shaunbless, who's half of Soul Diggaz. (Soul Diggaz have done production for Missy Elliott, Diddy, Beyoncé, and a bunch of other folks.) Dude just teamed up Missy on his track "Shake N Bake," which is a huge club hit. Check it out:

And then there's NSR. Dude's a half-Jewish rapper from the Upper West Side, and his live show has been getting some no-nonsense hype. Below is "Cream Cheese, Butter, Jelly," his take on "Beamer, Benz, or Bentley." Dope:
