SHAUN OF THE DEAD - Did You Know?

Trivia Compiled By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: IMDB / Wikipedia

I'm certain that I am not alone when I say that the movie "Shaun of the Dead" is one of the greatest comedies of all time. The collaboration between director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost is a perfect parody of zombie movies that serves as a spot on social commentary as well.

Who are the real zombies in the film?

Anyway the movie is one of my all-time favorites and I felt that is was about time that we took a closer look at this modern classic!

Did You Know?

In some markets, the film was released as Zombies Party.

Many of the Zombie extras are fans of the TV series Spaced, which also starred Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and was also directed by Edgar Wright. They were recruited through the Spaced Out fan web site to be in the film.

The phrase "fried gold" originated behind the scenes of Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes and Edgar Wright's sitcom Spaced and was mentioned several times on the DVD commentaries for that series. It makes several fan-pleasing appearances in the film.

Frequent references are made to Big Al's claim that dogs can't look up. This is a reference to the commentary to the second series of Spaced in which Simon Pegg (Shaun) and Edgar Wright talk about Nick Frost (Ed)'s claim that the difficulty in shooting a scene with a dog was due to the fact that dogs can't look up.

When Shaun, Liz, David, Dianne, Barbara and Ed run into the alternative 'gang' as they make their way to the Winchester, there are quite a few comedy partnerships brought together again. Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes - Tim and Daisy from Spaced. Lucy Davis and Martin Freeman - Dawn and Tim from The Office. Dylan Moran and Tamsin Greig - Bernard and Fran from Black Books. Julia Deakin and Nick Frost are, of course, in Spaced too, as Marsha and Mike respectively.

The zombie that Shaun (Simon Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) find in their garden is Mary, the checkout girl from the film's credit montage. A short story detailing her transformation into one of the undead was featured in issue 1384 of the classic British sci-fi comic 2000AD. The issue went on sale 7 April 2004. The strip was called "There's Something About Mary" and was written by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright (the film's co-writers) with art by Frazer Irving.

Shaun (Simon Pegg) complains that Ed (Nick Frost) isn't his boyfriend, then says, "Thanks, babe." In season one of Spaced, a conversation begins in a similar manner between the two actors ("All right, babe?"). This was, however, a total mistake. The writers used the same joke again, forgetting they had used it in Spaced.

Because of the timing and the indisputable similarity of the names, the distributors were forced to hold the film back until two weeks after Dawn of the Dead was released in the UK.

When Shaun and the group are running out of Liz's flat they are all carrying weapons of some kind, but only Shaun actually hits any zombies. This was because only the cricket bat that Shaun was carrying was a padded fake, all the other items were real and would have hurt the extras playing zombies if they had been hit with them.

John and Bernie run the Winchester. These are the real names of the landlord and landlady who used to run Simon Pegg's local pub, the Shepherds in Highgate. John used to make toasted sandwiches for regulars, hence the reference to "the Breville out back." Pegg and Nick Frost were regular attendees of the Shepherd's Thursday night quiz, hence the line "we do the quiz" when Shaun is knocking on the Winchester's door. Chris Martin of Coldplay, who plays a zombie in the film, also used to attend quiz night.

At one point, a zombie can be glimpsed wearing a yellow cycling helmet and lycra shorts. He's played by comedian Michael Smiley, who made appearances in Spaced as a bicycle courier named Tyres.

Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero was given a private viewing of the film near his home in Florida. During the scene in which Ed (Nick Frost) yells into the phone, "We're coming to get you, Barbara," Romero was oblivious to the fact it was a direct lift from his film Night of the Living Dead and only found out later after a phone conversation with director Edgar Wright.

According to writer-director Edgar Wright in the DVD commentary, when Ed attempts to cheer Shaun up at the Winchester with plans of binge drinking, he is actually summarizing the events of the next day (Z-day) entirely in drinking references. "Bloody Mary" - Checkout Girl, "Bite at the king's head" - Phillip, "Couple" - David and Di, "Little Princess" - Liz, "Stagger back" - impersonate zombies, "Bar For Shots" - firing rifle.

The garden scenes were originally a lot longer, featuring a hanged man zombie and a woman being eaten by her own dog (The dog was intended to be played by Spaced's Colin).

Shaun tells Liz that he's going to take her to "the place that does all the fish". When he opens the phone book you can see that the restaurant is literally called 'The Place That Does All the Fish'.

The film was inspired by the Spaced episode "Art", written by Pegg (along with his writing partner and co-star Jessica Stevenson) and directed by Wright, in which the character of Tim (Pegg), under the influence of amphetamine and the PlayStation video game Resident Evil 2, hallucinates that he's fighting off a zombie invasion. Having discovered a mutual appreciation for Romero's Dead trilogy, they decided to write their own zombie movie. Spaced was to be a big influence on the making of Shaun, as it was directed by Wright in a similar style, and featured many of the same cast and crew in minor and major roles (as well as Pegg, Wright and Stevenson, Nick Frost — who played Mike in Spaced — has a starring role in Shaun as Ed, and Peter Serafinowicz and Julia Deakin, who played Duane Benzie and Marsha in Spaced, respectively — appeared in Shaun as Pete and Yvonne's mum, respectively).

The scenes filmed in and around "The Winchester Pub" were shot at The Duke Of Albany in Monson Road New Cross, a three-storey Victorian pub popular with supporters of Millwall F.C. which was converted into luxury flats in 2007.

And now you know!

Celluloid Philosophers - Shaun And Ed

Ed: Any zombies out there?
Shaun: Don't say that!
Ed: What?
Shaun: That!
Ed: What?
Shaun: The zed-word. Don't say it!
Ed: Why not?
Shaun: Because it's ridiculous!
Ed: All right... are there any out there, though?
[looking out of the letter-box, he sees an empty street]
Shaun: I can't see any. Maybe it's not as bad as all that.
[he turns his head and sees a pack of zombies]
Shaun: Oh, no, there they are.

- Shaun (Simon Pegg) / Ed (Nick Frost) - Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Bonus:

Ed: What's the plan then?
Shaun: Right.
[cuts to dream sequence]
Shaun: We take Pete's car, we drive over to Mum's, we go in, take care of Philip - "I'm so sorry, Philip" - then we grab Mum, we go over to Liz's place, hole up, have a cup of tea and wait for this whole thing to blow over.
Ed: Why have we got to go to Liz's?
Shaun: Because we do.
Ed: But she dumped you!
Shaun: I have to know if she's all right!
Ed: Why?
Shaun: Because I love her!
Ed: All right... gayyy... I'm not staying there, though.
Shaun: Why not?
Ed: If we hole up, I wanna be somewhere familiar, I wanna know where the exits are, and I wanna be allowed to smoke.
Shaun: Okay.
[cuts to dream sequence again]
Shaun: We take Pete's car, go round Mum's, go in, deal with Philip - "Sorry, Philip!" - grab Mum, go to Liz's, pick her up, bring her back here, have a cup of tea and wait for this whole thing to blow over.
Ed: Perfect!
Shaun: No, no, no, no, no, wait, we can't bring her back here.
Ed: Why not?
Shaun: Well, it's not really safe, is it?
Ed: Yeah, look at the state of it.
Shaun: Where's safe? Where's familiar?
Ed: Where can I smoke?
[Shaun and Ed pause then slowly make a realisation]
Shaun: [cuts to dream sequence a third time] Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil - "Sorry." - grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?
Ed: Yeah, boyyyeee!
[Shaun and Ed clang their weapons together]

Shaun: They still out there?
[Ed checks, revealing two zombies scratching at the window]
Ed: Yeah. What you think we should do?
Shaun: Have a sit down?

SHAUN OF THE DEAD In 60 Seconds Scott Pilgrim Style

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Okay, you all should be aware of my love for everything Simon Pegg and Nick Frost related by now. I feel that they are the brightest comedy duo to come along in a long .... long .... long time and I feel that their latest film "Paul" was highly underrated by critics and fans alike.

That being said I would like to turn everyone on to this little bit of animation that I discovered on Youtube. This piece is the handy work of an animator who calls himself (herself?) "Pippinopalon" and I think that you will agree that it is bloody brilliant!

Here is the low-down from Pippinopalon:

My entry into the Empire/Jameson Done in 60 Seconds Competition 2011!

This is basically my love letter to all things Edgar Wright/Scott Pilgrim! I saw and read Scott Pilgrim in the summer of last year, and it had such a massive impact I decided to make this to vent my creative juices!

interesting fact - I did a cracking caricature of Bill Nighy but I had to leave it out in the end. Shame :(

I did the voices for Shaun and Ed and my mum kindly lent her vocal chords for Liz and Daisy... I Mean Yvonne!

Must be a dude if he did the voices of Shaun and Ed ..... hey you never know on the internet .... still don't I guess ..... could be a deep voiced woman ..... maybe?

Anyway .... great work!

Paul (2011)(Universal)

PAUL - Brilliant, Brilliant, Bloody Brilliant!
Written By: Ken Hulsey

Last night I was treated to an advanced screening of the movie "Paul" at the Irvine Spectrum hosted by Universal Pictures. As you probably already know, my wife and I are huge fans of both Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and the films "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" so my expectations for "Paul" were set very high.

I am happy to report that those expectations were both met and surpassed.

In my opinion both "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" are both modern classics so the big question on is "how does 'Paul' stand up in comparison?"

Of the three "Paul" is the funniest hands down, and I say that without hesitation. The gags and pop culture references in the film are none stop and if you are fan of both Pegg and Frost you should be out of your seat and on the floor rolling.

Is it low-brow humor? Yes, in its purest form.

At it's basic level Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have essentially taken the Tarnatino (Quentin) approach with "Paul" and mashed up an unrelenting parade of popular movie references and quotes. For most film makers this could spell disaster, but director Greg Mottola (Superbad) managed to put the whole soup together flawlessly.

"Paul" is easily "Jay and Silent Bob" meets "E.T." meets "Spaced" (a 1999 UK comedy series that Pegg both wrote and starred in alongside Frost). It's the ultimate "geek" movie plain and simple with homages to "Star Wars", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "The X-Files", Indiana Jones", "Star Trek" and surprisingly the often misunderstood 1980 fantasy film "Xanadu" which if you remember starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly.

Synopsis:

The film opens in the United States in 1947, with a dog named Paul scratching to be let outside, where the sky is covered in eerie lights. When his owner, a young girl, lets him out, he is crushed by a crash landing spaceship. The girl pulls an alien (Seth Rogen) from the wreckage, and names him Paul. He is taken away by the Government and held prisoner for 60 years. He eventually decides to escape from his holding place, Area 51.

Two English comic book nerds named Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost) have travelled to America for the annual Comic-Con convention and to visit all the sites of major extraterrestrial importance. On the way to their second site, they stop off at a café, where two hunters confront them. As they hurriedly leave, they reverse into the hunters' car, leaving a dent. At the next site, they see a car blasting towards them and, believing it to be the hunters, they speed off in their RV. Eventually, the car catches up, and they realize that it is not the hunters. As it overtakes, it speeds off the road, rolls several times, and comes to a halt in a field. The two shocked men get out to investigate. When they realize that the vehicle is empty and begin phoning the emergency services, they hear a voice saying 'I shouldn't do that if I were you'. They turn around, and a little grey alien comes into view, smoking a cigarette, and tells Clive to put the phone down. Clive faints, and Paul, introducing himself, explains to Graeme that he is on the run and needs their help. Graeme agrees to let him come. When Clive wakes up, he is not happy about the idea, but is eventually brought around.

Along the way, they are forced to take with them a Christian named Ruth (Kristen Wiig), who, until Paul shows her his memories, believes that there is nothing outside Earth and that God created humans. When he shatters her faith in Christianity, she suddenly becomes eager to 'sin', which she was not allowed to do before by her controlling father, who pursues them. She initially doesn't trust Paul, but to prove himself trustworthy, he heals her eye, as she has been blind in it since the age of four. The whole way, three secret agents, apparently eager to kill Paul under orders from a woman over the radio, have tailed them.

After a while, Paul decides to return to the girl whose dog he crashed his ship on and who subsequently saved his life, who is now an old woman, Tara Walton (Blythe Danner). She turns her gas cooker on but never gets round to doing anything with it, because they are interrupted by the agents. As the motley crew drives off with Paul, one of the agents shoots at them, and the gas ignites, destroying the house. Another agent catches up with them but drives off a bridge and is apparently killed.

By this time, Paul has revealed that his people are ready to pick him up, and he is heading to the rendezvous. When they get there, they set off a signal and wait. Eventually, eerie orange lights show up over the surrounding trees, and everyone believes that it is Paul’s race. However, it is an army helicopter, with 'the Big Guy' (Sigourney Weaver) on board, who is actually the woman commanding the three agents. As she and three troops backing her up move to shoot Paul, the third agent, Lorenzo Zoil (Jason Bateman), who turns out to be working for Paul, bursts out of the trees and takes out the men, but is shot in the shoulder. Tara knocks out 'the big guy', but Ruth's father Moses (John Carroll Lynch) appears with a shotgun and shoots Graeme dead. Paul heals him, but inflicts the damage to himself (a possible side effect of his healing powers mentioned earlier in the film). Paul then collapses, exhausted. For a while, the other characters stand around his apparently lifeless body sprawled on the grass. Then, coughing, Paul props himself up, having healed himself. 'The big guy' regains consciousness, but she is almost immediately crushed by an alien ship. Paul leaves in the ship, and takes Tara with him.

During the credits, Graeme, Clive and Ruth are shown two years later, again at a comic convention, promoting their new mega-successful comic book, "Paul".

The cast for "Paul" is very solid with both Pegg and Frost delivering the type of gags that made both "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" two of the greatest comedies of all time. Though I am not a big fan of Seth Rogen he did an excellent job acting as the voice of the lovable pot smoking alien Paul. Other standouts include Jason Bateman as the hard nosed government agent Zoil and Kristen Wiig as the Bible thumping Ruth Buggs who breaks free from her religious shackles and falls for Graeme.

Is "Paul" one of the greatest comedies ever? Undoubtedly, though I wouldn't rank it up there with either "Blazing Saddles" or "The Blues Brothers". I would have to rank it in the top ten ....... maybe even the top five.

Yes, the film is that good!

Readers of MIN will really enjoy this one on all levels. There are tons of references to films and TV series that only reel movie buffs will get, which may not work for some people, but for true fans of the sci fi and fantasy genre it serves as a perfect homage to everything they covet.

"Pau"l is absolutely a "must see" and will undoubtedly go down as another classic from the creative duo of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg!

A+ (+++++)

Univerasl Picks Up the Tab For PAUL Roadtrip

Written By: Ken Hulsey

It's great when you get to go on a cross-country holiday ..... and it's even better when you can talk a major movie studio into paying the tab.

That's exactly what actors Nick Frost and Simon Pegg did to prepare for their roles in the upcoming UFO comedy "Paul". The comedic duo decided that the best way to figure out how to approach their parts was to pack up a RV and head strait into America's UFO loving heartland. Much to their surprise, Universal was more than happy to fork over the money to cover the expenses.

Pegg notes,"We did the road trip initially as a way of getting a free holiday out of Universal but it was an incredibly inspiring time and a lot of what happened on that trip, we fed into the script. It was a great adventure."

Nick Frost adds, "It is work but you're also with your best mate, Sigourney Weaver's there and you're driving an Rv in the desert and it's beautiful and the food's great too."

Sounds like a dream I had once. I wonder if I can get Warner Bros to pay for my summer vacation? True, I'm not making a movie but hey it doesn't hurt to ask right?
