A Dose of Style: Maggie Gyllenhaal

Maggie Gyllenhaal is another fabulous lady that I've been crushing on for forever. I first saw her in the movie Donnie Darko, where she famously told a character played by her brother to "go suck a fuck." It has been love ever since. Maggie is dynamic on-screen, but her off-screen persona captivates me as well. She seems down to earth, and mysterious all at once, and doesn't appear to take life too seriously. I love that Maggie is always smiling, and I love her eclectic yet simple style.

Isn't she just divine? I really have no words to describe how much I adore Maggie Gyllenhaal, so I'll just leave you with this short video of the movie moment that sparked my Maggie love affair:

Until next time, xo.

A Dose of Style: Zooey Deschanel

I have had a crush on Zooey Deschanel for a long, long time. Long enough that I remember watching movies with her in them with my almost-boyfriend in high school & tossing up whether to be jealous that he thought she was so gorgeous, or be proud that he had such good taste in women. Zooey is an American actress, musician & singer-songwriter. She plays the keyboard, percussion, banjo & ukulele, and records along with M. Ward under the moniker of She & Him. Zooey appeared in a host of films such as Almost Famous, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Elf & (500) Days of Summer, and along the way became a poster girl for the "manic pixie dream girl" character. Plus, her style is so adorable that it gives me adorableness-related heart palpitations.

This dress is absolutely gorgeous. It reminds me of lemon meringue pie, but in a good way. A little bit edgy, a little bit princess & all-over awesome.

Notice how I sneaked another singing picture into this post? I could probably write a post on it's own about how much I love pictures of other people singing, but instead I think I'll just mention how I love this beautiful white lace dress paired with tights & slouchy boots.

This is one of my favourite red-carpet ensembles of all time. It's quirky without sacrificing elegance, and despite the unique style it still manages to look a little bit timeless. The lack of accessories directs all your attention to the incredible dress, as does the understated makeup.

Orange & yellow together? Brights on brights? Yes freakin' please! I think yellow & orange are two of the most underrated colours on the spectrum. Seeing someone wearing them at all is incredible - pairing them is just pure brilliance!

This dress reminds me of Sarah Misfit's triple polka-dot outfit, which is probably why I feel such all-encompassing love for it. I'd probably be tempted to carry around a vintage phone just because it looks so cute. I wonder if there is any way I could make a handbag out of one?

I have nothing but love for this nautical-themed outfit. The blouse is adorable, and this skirt is the perfect mix of cute & sexy. I actually think Blair Waldorf might be a little bit jealous of this one - but that might just be because I want someone besides myself to be a little bit jealous! If you're looking to work some Zooey-inspired whimsy into your wardrobe, here's a few ideas:
Zooey

Delve into your wardrobe and bring to the foreground anything with lace, ruffles, polka-dots, or oversized bows involved. Team cute day dresses with tights, kitsch accessories & brogues, wedges or adorable boots. Mix pussybow blouses & bright sweaters with high-waisted shorts, a-line skirts & a tailored blazer. Experiment with rompers, headbands, crochet dresses & embellished flats. For a knock-out nighttime look pare back the accessories & let your most unique pieces speak for themselves - with a good pair of heels by their side, of course. Deliver your most sarcastic diatribes with your most deadpan expression & then as you walk away break into a rendition of this number:

What do you think of Zooey? And who are you style-crushing on this week?

Until next time, xo.

A Dose of Style: Amy Winehouse

Hello there lovelies,

I've been meaning to pay tribute to today's style icon for some time, but I didn't really feel right jumping on the bandwagon immediately after her death. As much as Amy Winehouse, and her amazing music has touched my life, I didn't know her. I didn't feel like it was my place to comment on this woman just after her life had ended. Amy Winehouse was pretty amazing though - she was known for the eclectic mix of musical genres she performed, as well as her gorgeous contralto vocals, and a superpower for winning bucketloads of Grammys.

She was a pretty damn stylish person too, at least in my opinion. I used to hear people ragging on Amy's style, but I always admired her strong aesthetic.

Seriously, you don't screw with this kind of bad-assery. This is the kind of outfit made for shooting spitballs at the teacher from the back row of the classroom, and yet it still has all the Amy Winehouse essentials - amazingly big hair, winged eyeliner & a bit of retro.

I am dying for the day when my hair is long enough again that I can sport a beehive this magnificent. I love all the little retro details in this look, and I love this photograph. I think it reveals a little bit of the vulnerability that Amy always had about her, if you looked for it.

This outfit is just Amy Winehouse all over. Sexy retro glam, that fabulous beehive & the winged eyeliner, paired with a good pair of jeans.

This was another gorgeous look for Amy - loving the cute dress with red accents. Mostly, I'm just still incredibly jealous of her amazing hair.

Not so valid stylistically I guess, but I do love this photograph of Amy. I think it shows a good measure of all of the things that Amy Winehouse was - fabulously talented, smoulderingly sexy, a little bit vulnerable, and wholly in a class of her own. If you'd like to try a little bit of Amy in your next look, here's a few tips:

Amy Winehouse

For a casual daytime look layer a white singlet, possibly stolen from your lover's closet over a neon colored bra. Tease your hair as big as it can possibly go, get crazy with your eyeliner, then slide on your best pair of dark skinny jeans & a gold-plaited belt. Throw on a pair of red sunglasses, or a strange headdress as you walk out the door. When you sashay off to your evening rockstar engagments, switch to a gorgeous retro-styled dress, tease your hair up even bigger, and tie a patterned scarf in your hair to accentuate it. Accessorise with killer heels, pops of red, nautical everything & lashing of the blackest eyeliner. Before you walk out the door, make a toast to dearly departed Amy, and belt out this amazing number in her memory:

R.I.P. Amy Winehouse. The world still misses you.

Until next time, xo.

A Dose of Style: Kelly Osbourne

Hello there lovelies,

After reviewing Kelly Osbourne's biography this week, and revisiting my last style post about this lovely lady, I figured that it was time for an update. I don't know why so many people dislike Kelly so much, although this might be because of my massive girl crush. I think it's been pretty cool to have someone fairly similar to me in Hollywood, as she grows up alongside me & finds her own style.

Drooling all over this jacket & stretchy pencil skirt combo. As you're probably aware, in my view too many studs is never enough.

Loving this casual-rocker vibe. Her platinum blonde pixie-ish cut was amazing, and she looks clean-cut, but with edge.

Yellow! Gosh, I love it so damn much when people wear yellow. Kelly looks so dang cute & comfy (points to everyone who noticed the matching yellow fuck-off-bow in her hair).

What's life without a good vinyl dress & jacket ensemble once in a while? It just got sexy up in here!

Getting this out of the way first: Jack Osbourne grew up a little bit fine, didn't he? Anyhow, love the nana hair, love the crazy leopard jacket. Kelly is a total stunner.

I am all over this outfit so hard. Nana hair, cool sunnies, florals, bright coloured shorts, wedges with socks, oh my! Plus, Kelly has chosen to accessorise with a bit of arm candy. Always a good decision. If you want to put a little bit o' Osbourne into your wardrobe, here's a few tips:

Kelly Osbourne

Start with a good jacket, preferably in leather, leopard print, covered in studs, or with some kind of interesting detail. Team your crazy awesome jacket with simple pieces, like a little black dress, or stripe skirt, in flattering cuts & interesting fabrics. Keep accessories minimal (other than your round or catseye sunglasses), and ask your Grandma to help you with a blue rinse for your hair. Make black ballet flats a wardrobe staple, and mix things up with bow, stud or sequin detailing on your flats. Don't leave the house without a large statement shoulder bag, to hold all your things while you're rocking out. On your way out the door, grab a microphone and jam to an old-school hit:

Until next time, xo.

A Dose Of Style: Adele

Hello there lovelies,

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins is a British singer-songwriter, and a lady who seems to consistently divide public opinion. I have heard her touted as the epitome of beauty & talent, and I have heard people making ugly remarks about everything from her looks, to her body, to her voice. I lean more towards the first camp - I think Adele is absolutely fabulous. Apparently, enough people agree with me for her latest album to have been certified platinum 14 times over in the UK, and for her to take out Grammy awards in six categories earlier this year. Plus, I am of the opinion that she always looks bitchin'.

How is it possible for someone to look this damn amazing while belting their heart out? Love the hair, love the smoky eye, and love the sneaky pattern on her beautiful dress.

I am all over this cut in dresses at the moment. It's flirty but modest, sexy but subtle, and has a little bit of retro edge. I'm also totally digging the blingy shoes.

This jacket. Luckily Adele has already positioned herself in a slightly seedy looking alley, because I'm planning to mug her, and make off with this jacket. Do you reckon she'd still give me an autograph after that?

Another beautifully cut dress, and have I mentioned how in awe I am of this lady's hair yet? I probably shouldn't say that my first thought was, "Wow, if only it wasn't totally creepy to think about scalping someone," and pretend that I was smart enough to think of a replica wig first. Yeah, that. I totally want a replica wig of Adele's hair, no scalping involved.

Again with the fabulous hair! How hot does this lady smoulder in this dress? It suits her shape perfectly, and is just all-around frickin' sexy. I approve. If you're wanting to carry yourself with a bit of Adele swagger, here's how to go about it:

Adele

Invest in a beautifully made, perfectly tailored black dress. Choose a style that emphasizes your waist, and shows off your gorgeous figure, possibly in a textured or slightly sparkly fabric. Team with classically styled monochrome heels in velvet, suede, or with gold detail. Acessorize with intricate gold earrings that dangle around your face, and maybe a cocktail ring or two. Paint your nails fire engine red, put on your best smoky eye, and swathe your lips in the same colour as your nails. Give the mirror your best smirk, and then bust out this number:

Until next time, xo.

A Dose of Style: Megan Washington

Hello there lovelies,

I'm going to continue my streak of idolizing the style of female musicians. I have to sheepishly admit that I'd never listened to any of Megan Washington's music until I saw her on re-runs of Spicks & Specks over the Christmas break. It was in that game where they sing to the rhythm of a popular song, using words from a book as lyrics that I fell in love with Megan Washington's voice. It was when I finally decided to Google her that I fell in love with her style.

How holy-freaking-adorable is she? I love her haircut, and I think I'm going to have to glitter myself up a pair of ruby slippers to match these ones. Oh, and I love everything else about this outfit. That just goes without saying, right?

I'd also like to steal this amazing glittery thing. Just for, you know, everyday wear. I reckon something like this would make doing my groceries a lot more fun. Not just for me, I reckon I'd help brighten up the cashiers day as well. It's just like glittery community service.

What do you know, Megan is already in a dark alley waiting for me to steal this outfit. And no, it's totally not creepy to assume that. I'm incredibly sad right now that all my Winter clothing - including my precious collection of beanies - is in storage.

Have I mentioned the word "adorable" in this post yet? Oh, I have? I'm just going to go ahead and mention it again right now. How adorable is this striped dress, tights & boots combo? How amazeballsy adorable is Megan Washington?

Cutest see-through dress ever? I certainly think so. Plus, it's my colour of the week! I seriously want to hug her just for wearing this gorgeous creation.

We all know how crazy I go for pictures of my style icons singing, right? Plus, Megan looks totally fab. If you're unconvinced, then listen to her sing (and oogle the styling of her film clips):

Who's rocking your style boat this week?

Until next time, xo.

A Dose Of Style: Marina Diamandis

Hello there lovelies,

You may have noticed that for the last few weeks I've been obsessing over the style of musicians. I don't know what it is about front women, but they all seem to be rocking something that I dig. This week is no exception. Meet Marina Diamandis - better known by her stage name, Marina & the Diamonds. The lovely Marina is a Welsh singer-songwriter, who is now based in London. In 2008 she opened shows for Gotye, and has a synaesthetic condition which makes her see musical notes & days of the week in different colours. She is also totally fabulous.

I do love a good bodysuit/lack of pants combination. The cape is a particularly nice touch.

Marina looks like some kind of musical superhero here. The tambourine is possibly magical.

I have seen this animal cape in a few fashion mags, and long ago added it to the list of "clothes I would mug someone for".

Neon colours, animal print, and fringe all together? I just fell in love, again.

More singing pictures! I am all over the animal ears, and the huge glasses. And, of course, a leather jacket is always a plus.

More bodysuits! More animal print! More fringe! Plus, a delightful fuck off bow, and some faded denim. Marina, you are my new Queen. Here's some of her music clips, in case you're interested:

Until next time, xo.
