I've been meaning to pay tribute to today's style icon for some time, but I didn't really feel right jumping on the bandwagon immediately after her death. As much as Amy Winehouse, and her amazing music has touched my life, I didn't know her. I didn't feel like it was my place to comment on this woman just after her life had ended. Amy Winehouse was pretty amazing though - she was known for the eclectic mix of musical genres she performed, as well as her gorgeous contralto vocals, and a superpower for winning bucketloads of Grammys.
She was a pretty damn stylish person too, at least in my opinion. I used to hear people ragging on Amy's style, but I always admired her strong aesthetic.
Seriously, you don't screw with this kind of bad-assery. This is the kind of outfit made for shooting spitballs at the teacher from the back row of the classroom, and yet it still has all the Amy Winehouse essentials - amazingly big hair, winged eyeliner & a bit of retro.
Not so valid stylistically I guess, but I do love this photograph of Amy. I think it shows a good measure of all of the things that Amy Winehouse was - fabulously talented, smoulderingly sexy, a little bit vulnerable, and wholly in a class of her own. If you'd like to try a little bit of Amy in your next look, here's a few tips:
For a casual daytime look layer a white singlet, possibly stolen from your lover's closet over a neon colored bra. Tease your hair as big as it can possibly go, get crazy with your eyeliner, then slide on your best pair of dark skinny jeans & a gold-plaited belt. Throw on a pair of red sunglasses, or a strange headdress as you walk out the door. When you sashay off to your evening rockstar engagments, switch to a gorgeous retro-styled dress, tease your hair up even bigger, and tie a patterned scarf in your hair to accentuate it. Accessorise with killer heels, pops of red, nautical everything & lashing of the blackest eyeliner. Before you walk out the door, make a toast to dearly departed Amy, and belt out this amazing number in her memory:
R.I.P. Amy Winehouse. The world still misses you.
Until next time, xo.
