Book Club: Fierce by Kelly Osbourne

Hello there lovelies,

I last wrote about my love affair with Kelly Osbourne almost two years ago. I'm actually quite surprised that it has taken me this long to read her autobiography, Fierce. Usually I'm all over anything that Kelly does like my crazy cat is all over cheese. Even if it took me a while I'm actually really glad that I took the time to read this book.

Kelly Osbourne has never been one to beat around the bush when she wants to say something, and her autobiography is no different. She writes about turning thirteen, about relocating from Britain to Beverly Hills & back again, her music career, and about beauty & fashion. She writes about living with a drug-addicted father, being on The Osbournes, and eating her feelings. She writes about her first sexual experiences, her own drug & alcohol addiction & her eventual trips to rehab. Kelly writes matter-of-factly, and incredibly honestly about her sometimes strange life experiences.

I could relate so much to the emotions that Kelly wrote about, and it's incredibly interesting to me to know that being the child of a celebrity doesn't necessarily exempt you from feeling pretty shitty about yourself at times. At the time The Osbournes was screening, I idolised Kelly, but she writes, "I hated seeing myself on screen. I hated the way I looked. I hated my voice, I hated my pink hair, the way I dressed, everything!" But, it is the way that Kelly wrote so openly about her drug & alcohol addiction that really captivated me. I've struggled with alcohol in my life, and sometimes it felt like Kelly Osbourne was writing my own feelings on the page, like when she wrote - "The first time I popped one of those pills I felt so much better again. The anxiety I was feeling just disappeared. It was the easy option." It's just so good to read a realistic account of addiction from someone similar to me.

I do think that this book is probably aimed at people in a younger age group than me - mainly teenagers. In the blurb inside the cover Kelly writes, "Who is Kelly Osbourne? I'm still not totally sure. But I do know who I'm not, and I want to help other people make the right decisions with the difficult choices we all face when growing up." Her autobiography is filled with inserts about different organisations that you can contact if you are having trouble in almost any aspect of your life, and helpful advice from both Kelly & other influential people in her life. Kelly also writes at length about different aspects of her career, and adjusting to life in the public eye.

All in all, I think this book is perfect for who Kelly dedicates it to - "every young woman who's ever felt lost." My only gripe is that I wish the book contained more images, but once you start reading that doesn't really detract from the incredible story of this particular lost young woman. If you're looking for something to read, I recommend giving Fierce a go.

Until next time, xo.
