Godzilla 2012 In The News 04/12/10

As expected, news is very slow on the "Godzilla 2012" front, but I did come across three items that will be of interest to all you "G" junkies out there.

First off, I have a wonderful article about the nine mistakes that Roland Emmerich made with "Godzilla 98", that Legendary Pictures should avoid at all costs by Christine Champ of Film.com

Then, during my internet travels this morning I came across a press release from "Godzilla Toys .Net" about a huge sale that they are having.

Then to round things out, I have an article that is several days old now, by film student Jesse West, and his take on what should happen in "Godzilla 2012".

What's green and scaly, breathes fire, and eats raw fish?

No, not Lady Gaga. (Not yet, anyhow.) Alert the coast guard, Mothra, and monster-movie aficionados because ... Godzilla's back! Again.

Since 1954 the Toho Company's Godzilla franchise has spawned 28 films. Now Legendary Pictures has struck a deal with Toho to produce a 21st-century Godzilla reboot due out in 2012. It will pay tribute to the pop culture icon's Japanese Gojira roots rather than 2012 director Roland Emmerich's much maligned 1998 Godzilla (starring Matthew Broderick, Hank Azaria, and Jean Reno). Said Thomas Tull, Legendary CEO, "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see."

While that sounds spectacularly promising, with the Emmerich flop in mind we'd like mention a few 1998 Godzilla mistakes to avoid (in case anyone at Legendary is listening).

1. Murderous or misunderstood?
Godzilla's an asexual reptile who only squashes people when provoked -- any real estate damage is accidental. More maternal than murderous, his instincts drive him to score a nest and some sashimi for his brood. Then again, his raptor-like little 'uns seem set on devouring every fishy-smelling human in sight. So ... which is it? Are Godzilla and his kin misunderstood monsters or bloodthirsty menaces? Ideally Godzilla 2012 will have more clarity.

2. More fireball.
It's his trademark. So why does Godzilla '98 hardly blast his fiery breath? And are his kids too tiny to cough up a fireball or two?

3. Less Jurassic Park.
True, Godzilla's from the Jurassic period (according to Gojira) but does that excuse his uncanny resemblance to Jurassic Park's T-Rex, or the goofy gumball scenes that seem to pass raptors off for Godzilla toddlers? Especially now, with Hollywood's CGI skills as good as they are, we expect a uniquely fantastic 2012 Godzilla.

Anger. Disgust. Hatred. Rage. Denial. These are just a few of the words that come to mind whenever somebody mentions the abomination that was Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin’s remake of “Godzilla” to me. Just the mere thought of that ugly iguana makes me want to punch something very, very hard. I bring up this bad, bad memory for one reason. Hollywood is taking another stab at the King of the Monsters.

Near the end of March, it was announced that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, having already achieved cinematic gold with “The Dark Knight” and “Watchmen,” have secured the rights to Godzilla from Toho, the studio responsible for 28 G-flicks from 1954 to 2004. Suffice to say, a flood of fan fury has swept the internet.
In preparation for this article, I intended to jump into said flood but, realizing that millions of others would have already polluted it, decided to be a bit more rational. Instead of a profanity-laced rant, this lifelong fan of the Big G will develop a five-point wish list for the new film, in the hopes that the Hollywood execs in charge might actually care what the fans want and will try to satisfy them.

The first point to be made just happens to be the most important one; don’t mess up Godzilla. Anyone who remembers the fallout from the 1998 remake knows that the one thing that bothered people more than anything was that Godzilla was a powerless CGI iguana easily killed by the military. If Warner Bros. wants to avoid a repeat of the past, they’d be wise to keep Godzilla as a radioactive, fire-breathing dinosaur portrayed by a stuntman in a rubber suit stomping around miniature sets.
