Everyone's favourite gigantic, havoc-wreaking lizard, Godzilla, is on his way back to the big screen via Legendary Pictures, which has acquired the rights to develop and produce a new feature based on the iconic Toho Co. character. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute through its deal with Legendary, and Toho will roll out the film in Japan.
The last major Godzilla outing, an American version from Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, grossed $376 million worldwide in 1998 despite fielding equally major criticism. The following year Toho produced Godzilla 2000, in which the big beast took on an evil UFO.
But the Godzilla franchise juggernaut has survived decades of permutations (he first appeared in 1954), dozens of films, books, video games and seems perpetually ready to rear up for new audiences. The new film is aiming for a 2012 release.

‘Godzilla’ is returning to cinema screens in 2012.
Legendary Pictures is to start work on a new version of the Japanese monster movie this year and a director will be announced soon.
Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary, is looking forward to work on the project – based on the iconic movie series from Japan’s Toho Studios - getting underway.

Legendary Pictures has announced that they have picked up the rights from Toho Company Ltd. to adapt the Godzilla character, once again, for American audiences. The company will be producing the film in cooperation with Warner Bros.
According to the press release, the company stated that it "intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic manner possible." This is likely a reference to the radioactive lizard's first American outing, the 1998 TriStar Pictures film directed by disaster-film Auteur Roland Emmerich.

The giant whale-gorilla was first featured in Ishiro Honda's 1954 film Gojira and has since appeared in numerous "giant monster" Japanese films.
An American remake directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Matthew Broderick was released in 1998.
Now executives at Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros Pictures are breathing new life into the franchise by co-producing a new Godzilla film which will "pay respects to the original pic rather than follow up on Sony's 1998 Godzilla," according to Daily Variety.
