Looks like we can take Tim Burton off the list of possible "Godzilla 2012" directors......and it looks like Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros aren't the only studio looking to unleash some giant monster action in cinemas come 2012.
It has just been announced that DreamWorks has acquired the movie rights to the giant monster game, "Monsterpocalypse" from Privateer Press.
In conjunction with this acquisition, the studio has also announced that they have opened up talks with film maker, Tim Burton, to helm the project.
Burton, who is reportedly a huge "Godzilla" movie fan, had been high on most fans wish-lists to direct, "Godzilla 2012" for Legendary Pictures, now seems poised to make his own style of giant monster film for the rival studio, DreamWorks, instead.
Monsterpocalypse, is a miniature battle game that features giant monsters, robots, tanks and other various weapons and creatures. The game first burst on the board game scene in 2008 and immediately sold out in retail outlets across the country. Since then Privateer Press has released numerous expansion sets with new monsters ans other game related items.
This year the game company will add "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" to their Monsterpocalypse line. Reportedly the game, which is scheduled to be released in July, will contain 22 pre-painted plastic figures, including Voltron, 5 Voltron Lions, 5 Galaxy Garrison Cruisers, Lo-Tron, 1 Prince Lotor’s Command Ship, 4 Robeasts, and 5 Lo-Tron Force Skull Ships. The game will also include 1 double-sided play mat, 24 specialty dice, 4 status counters, and a full-color rulebook.
So far, not much is known about DreamWorks plans for the "Monsterpocalypse" movie, and at this time the only other name attached to the project, besides Burton, is the games developer, Matt Wilson, who is set to co-produce.
