Style Inspiration: The First Wives Club

Hello lovelies,

When Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves blared through the speakers at work today, I was reminded of one of my all-time favourite movies, featuring three of the most fabulous actresses in existence. I am, of course, talking about The First Wives Club, starring Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton.

The film is a comedy about three women who realize at the funeral of a friend that they have all been cheated by their ex-husbands, who all went on to leave their for younger women. They decide to form a "First Wives" club, and proceed to get hilarious, hilarious revenge on their former partners.

Diane Keaton plays a rather anxious & neurotic housewife, who tries to reconcile her differences with her ex-husband until she realizes that he is cheating on her with their therapist. Bette Midler plays a witty & sarcastic single mum, whose mob/family connections got her ex-husbands business started before he left her for a young blonde with expensive taste. Goldie Hawn plays an alcoholic, former-Oscar-winning actress who kick-started her former husbands film career - before he has an affair with a girl that he doesn't realize is only 16.

Apparently it developed somewhat of a cult following amongst middle-aged women (and little girls named Stacey - probably for the best that I didn't actually grow up to be Goldie Hawn's character like I wanted). I find it interesting to watch these movies now and see how some of the clothing items come back into fashion. Bodysuits and denim shorts anyone? Chunky knit sweaters? Tuxedo jackets for women?

Corny as this movie may be, it still makes me feel like I can do anything. If I'm having a crap day, I can chuck this movie on and it always makes me feel better. I often sing & dance around my lounge room whilst I watch it. The other thing this movie does is make me really, really miss my friends. I love that even though these characters have been abandoned by the people who promised to love them forever, they realize that there are still these other people who will still love them forever, even if it is sometimes quietly & from a distance.

The best bit of the movie.

Until next time, xo.

P.S. Here is a recent picture of Diane Keaton, Better Midler & Goldie Hawn - aren't they all gorgeous?!

Style Inspiration: The Hairy Bird

Hello there lovelies,

If you haven't ever seen The Hairy Bird (apparently, also known as Strike! and All I Wanna Do), then you should rectify this immediately.

The Hairy Bird is set in 1963, at Miss Goddard's Preparatory School For Girls, a single-sex boarding school. Odette, or "Odie" is transferred to Miss Goddard's against her will because her parents fear that things are getting too serious with her boyfriend. There she befriends her eccentric roomates - the stubborn & resourceful Verena, and smart-mouthed, boy-crazy Tinka. Along with scientifically-minded Maureen ("Momo"), and insecure Theresa ("Tweety"), they make up the DAR (Daughters of the American Ravioli), a secret club with the motto "No More Little White Gloves."

The DAR's members meet in secret to discuss their future ambitions while eating cold ravioli stolen from the kitchen.. The girls band together to solve various "problems", such as a lecherous male teacher and snotty hall monitors, with hilarious results. Then they get some shocking news - due to a lack of funds, Miss Goddard's is planning to merge with a nearby boys boarding school. The girls discover a whole lot about life, and about themselves as they fight to preserve the school that they love, and stay out of the shadow of "the hairy bird."

I like to think of The Hairy Bird as a chick flick with substance. It is about friendship, and women cheering each other on, not tearing each other down. It is about fighting for what is right, and standing up for what you believe in. It is a movie about feminism, and about life. I've watched it so many times now that it feels like Odie, Verena, Tinka, Momo & Tweety are amongst my best friends. Plus, the costumes are enough to make anyone long for a bit of 60's inspiration. Blazers, knee-high socks, beehives, and adorable dresses? Sounds like a plan to me.

"Miss Goddard's gave us a voice, and now it's kind of hard to shut up."

"These are your daughters, you can be proud."

For a few more shots of outfits from the movie (and one amazingly, kick-assly hilarious song created for it), check out this video.

Alright, well I'm off to mug some kids & steal their boarding school uniforms. Aw crap, did I just say that out loud? What I meant to say is, if you're looking for a movie that encompasses fashion, fun, and feminism, you're in luck.

Until next time, xo.
